Gina McCloskey is a Canadian oil painter who resides in Innisfil, Ontario, close to the shores of Lake Simcoe. Inspired by trees, water and the natural flora and fauna of the area, she connects to the elements of nature which activate her imagination. Gina carries a diploma in Fine Arts Advanced with Honours from Georgian College, a Bachelors of Fine Arts Honours Degree from Thompson Rivers University and a diploma in Interior Decorating from Humber College. Gina has been featured on online art platforms and has received several awards for her paintings. Whether living next to the forest, in the busy city or by the water, Gina has always tapped into the inspiration of nature and the whimsey of her dreams.
Gina is an explorer of the fantastic, mystical world around her. In her practice, gemstones and other natural objects are deeply studied acting as mirrors for her embedded beliefs, memories and dreams. As a paleontologist excavates hidden treasures, Gina utilizes a paintbrush and oil paint, grounded in a heightened natural palette, and unearths layers of intricate patterns akin to the markings on the stones. Influenced by Italian folklore, her work depicts archetypes and universal symbols that lead the eye from one vast, inhabited dreamscape to another. Extraordinary characters and allegories materialize as a kaleidoscope of reconstructed fables. Gina’s work embodies an eroded psyche longing to ripen, the bones revealing “veritas,” a truth that she bares with each whimsical brushstroke.
